Split Squad Wednesday

Becky and the Varsity Boys stayed at home for a workout in preparation for Saturday's Clovis Invitational, while the rest of the squad traveled to Woodward Reservoir north of Oakdale for the Escalon Invitational.

Early reports from the invitational are encouraging.  Freshmand Jackson Calbreath placed 4th in the freshman race, with a time of 13:02 for the hilly 2.1 mile course.  This is only 4 seconds off of his best 2 mile time of 12:58 set on the flat, fast legion park course.  Great improvement for Jackson.

The Varsity boys did tempo intervals in the arboretum today.  The 6 boys racing on Saturday, plus Becky went for 4 x 1200 tempo with about 1:30 recovery.  Nothing too hard today.  Times follow

Keaton: all in 4:25-4:27
Zach and Adam: all in 4:26-4:30
Leo: all in 4:31-4:33
Caleb: 1 in 4:58 then stopped due to a sore hip
Jared: Taking promotion from the JV squad seriosly.  Ran a smartly paced workout 4:58, 4:52, 4:53, 4:58.
Becky: All in 4:39-4:41

Mason and Pablo traveled with the team today, but did not race.  They were assigned 3 miles easy + 5-7 hill reps on the course.  Mason and Pablo will RUN THEIR FIRST RACE OF THE SEASON on 10/15 at the Bella Vista Invitational.  For those two boys, it will be a race against time to regain fitness in a short period of time while still remaining healthy.  Their workouts and cross traininng has been solid for the past 1.5 weeks, so we are hopeful.

Ian is still in cross training mode and will probably not run a race again until TVL finals.

Solid workout Saturday

Varsity Group ran 2.8 tempo + 1200 @ current 5k pace + 800 @ goal 5k pace.  Only the kids that are 100% healthy did the whole workout.  Others did modified versions.

Name           2.8 tempo           1200              800
Adam           16:49                  4:18               2:40
Zach             16:49                  4:18               2:40
Leo               18:14                  4:32              2:43
Becky           18:18                  4:32              2:44
Caleb            18:55                  4:42              2:53

Nice job of hitting the paces and not racing the workout.  It was good to see some of the other athletes beginning to show a return to health (times not published).

Some of the JV kids' workouts went really well also.  Our young guys and girls are really fired up after their huge 2 mile time improvements from TVL #1 to TVL #2 (over a minute better per runner in the top 5, + at 3:40 improvement from our #6 runner!).  The JVs did a 2 mile tempo and another 2 x 800.  Hint, there were some 2 mile PRs on the tempo run. Those PR's were run easily (since the workout was done in the morning and the weather was 30 degrees cooler than wednesday afternoon.). The JVs were then able to come back with some very solid 800s.  If you guys can hold those paces from your 800s in an actual race, you will not be beaten again at TVL finals.

Supercross Video

I made a few minor changes and will eventually try to get a nicer, finished version up on the blog.

Lots of Catching Up.

No updates in a while.  Still struggling with injuries as a team.  Making some changes to the training to try and get healthy.

On the Mend
Leo - pretty much back to training.  Developing some shin splints, however.
Pablo - returned to running last week.  Still doing most of his work in the pool and on the bike
Mason - same as Pablo
Keaton - slowly getting over whatever sickness is troubling him
Ian - will resume training today.
Karissa - Over her achilles soreness
Caleb - Calf tweak last week appears to just have been a cramp.

Tasha - Having a hard time resting.  Tweaked calf again over weekend at church function
Kady - Went to same church function as Tasha and tweaked a hip that started acting up on Friday.
Haley - Achilles insertion into calcaneus flared up during last wednesday's workout.  No warning signs.

Yes, Virginia.  That is almost the entirety of both varsity squads.  The coaching staff will have to look long and hard at why our injury rate is so high this year.
