Time Trial #2....One for the decade!

In 2003, our varsity boys won the Section D4 crown by 50 points over runner up Colfax.  That year, at the pre-season time trial, the boys top 5 ran a team time of 55:10.  For the last 8 years, the closest any team has come to the 2003 squad was last year's group, who put up a team time of just over 58 minutes.  That was until this year.  This year's group ran the following.

Ian Brooks 10:39
Adam Lundell 11:02
Keaton Crowder 11:14
Mason Deal 11:22
Zach Morrett 11:25

The total team time for this year's top 5 was 55:41, 31 seconds slower than 2003, but definitely in the same league.

This is extra impressive because Pablo and Leo didn't run today, due to nagging injuries and Keaton was slowed by a large blister on the arch of his foot.  Once everyone is healty, our boys will be very, very formidable.

Perhaps an even bigger surprise was our girls performance.  We have been battling all kinds of little aches and pains since day one of practice and still ran no where near full strength today.  Despite that fact, our girls were still able to post the second fastest team time in my Hughson coaching tenure.

The girls put up a team time of 73:25 with contributions from new and returning runners. The top 5 were:

Becky Hobby 12:02
Tasha Spears 14:53
Kaitlynn Daugherty 14:58
Juliette Guliacci 15:25
Karissa Swick 16:07

All these times were accomplished with the thermometer reading 97 degrees.

Week 12 totals

It looks like 7 people will earn shirts this year.  We've got 2 weeks to go  in the mileage comp and the leaderboard looks pretty much set.  Check the mileage totals to see where you stand.

All athletes on the team are now on the list, even if you just started last week.

Big day today.... Pre-season Time Trial #2.  This is the one that goes in the yearly record books.  Let's make it a good one.

Excellent Tempo

Some of the varsity crew met this morning for a tempo run.  Right now, with Pablo and Leo a little dinged up, we are not as deep as I would like.  Today's run however should be a major confidence boost for us.  I am feeling much more confident about our team after the run than before.

4.5 miles tempo 8:30 AM, 60 degrees
Ian 28:03
Keaton 28:04
Adam 28:33
Mason 28:36
Zach 29:33
Becky 29:36

Fantastic job by Mason today.  A late start forced him to run the tempo alone.  His time put him right behind Adam.  Mason...don't believe in the pecking order.  You don't have to hang back from these guys on our normal training sessions.  You showed that you could run just as fast as our top 3.  This makes us much stronger as a team.

2.8 miles tempo
Ryan 21:15
Kady 21:40

Excellent to see Kady running pain free.  This is one of the best training sessions I have seen from her in a long time.

We have had a VERY GOOD week of training.  The athletes are getting used to the heat of the afternoon and we have been adding in some quality workouts.  We had our first hill repeat session and first VO2 max session this week.

A number of new runners are showing some promise.

For the girls, Maddy Mays (9th grade) has been a very nice surprise.  Karissa Swick has been performing well also, but that is no surprise.

For the boys, Jackson Calbreath, Brigham Lee, and Jared Williams continue to set the pace for the first year runners.  A nice surprise on the boys side comes from Eric Peltzer.  Eric a senior, who decided to start running just this summer.  Congrats to Eric on beginning in the best sport on campus.  Keep up the good work.

Week 12 mileage totals will be posted shortly.

First Week of Practice.....In the books

The first week of practice is done and the coaching staff thinks things have gone pretty smoothly.  First I am proud to announce 2 new additions to our coaching staff. Coach K and I will now be joined by Keith Bullock.  Coach Bullock was hired at HHS to teach history and freshman state requirements.  He formerly was coach of a league champion team in Coalinga.  Also joining the staff is Jack Bland.  Jack is in his 3rd year as a teacher at HHS, but is joining our staff for the first time.  Jack is realatively new to running. His experiences as a new runner should really help to bring along or most novice athletes. Both coach Bullock and Coach Bland will be tasked with training the rookie crew that reports after school While Coach K and myself will work with the varsity crew.

Our first two days were very easy (only 5 mile runs for the top group) and designed to get the athletes used to running in the hottest part of the day again.  Even though we have had a very mild summer, it was in the mid 90s for the first part of the week and the runners were really struggling.  In addition, we hadn't started school yet so, despite my best efforts to make sure the team knew when we were working out, there were a few notable athletes missing from the group.

Wednesday we held the first of our two annual pre-season 2 mile time trials.  The results were slow, as usual on the first wednesday of official workouts.  Runners still weren't used to the heat and we haven't given an all out effort since last may.  None the less we had some very good performances.

Ian finished in 11:29 on splits of 6:15 then 5:14
Zach made huge gains on his pre-season form from last year, improving his TT from 15:03 to 12:28
Becky, despite feeling slow and sluggish, was 13 seconds faster than last year, finishing in 12:22.

I will be putting full TT #1 results up on the results page later today.

Overall, the times were slower than I would have liked, considering the solid training that we have put in this summer.  However, in comparison to other years, it was a very solid first effort.  Our second time trial.

By the time Thursday had rolled around, the athletes were beginning to get into the rhythm of running in the afternoon and were doing the things (like hydrating and being smart about what they are eating) and training started to really click.  The varsity runners totalled 9 miles and included a full set of drills and 6 x100m strides with a jog back recovery.  We are working on a new schedule with the varsity athletes.  They are starting their training day during 7th period.  During that time, they are able to get in a 4-5 mile run.  By the time they are done with that run, school is over and the rookie crew is ready to practice. At this point, we have the whole team do a quick set of stretching and then drills.  After drills, we are able to send the varsity kids out for another 3-4 miles.  The real bonus here, is that this schedule allows the faster rookies to keep up with the varsity runners on the varsity's second run.

Friday, we followed the same schedule as Thursday, but the second run of the day was a tempo effort on the 2.8 mile Hatch Tully Loop.  Once again, it was hot and the kids were already a bit tired from the first run (which essentially served as a 4.4 mile warm up), but our whole varsity crew was able to finish in the 18-19 min range.  Some of our better rookies also ran the same 2.8 mile tempo.  Among those, Brigham looked the best finishing in 21:03
